Contract Description:
This project focuses on evaluating the restoration of anadromy to a number of watersheds within and adjacent to the Umatilla River Subbasin.  Beginning in 2021 this project will focus on uncertainties about restoring steelhead to the McKay Creek Drainage.  In future years, the focus will expand to Butter and Willow Creek watersheds. Managers are considering restoring anadromy throughout the McKay Creek watershed by passing adult anadromous fish over McKay Dam to spawn naturally in the watershed. There are a number of uncertainties about releasing fish above the barrier in terms of spawning distribution, timing, and movement. This project will survey streams for passage impediments from the confluence with the Umatilla River, up the mainstem, above the dam, and into the headwaters.  Spawning surveys will be conducted below McKay Dam and above McKay dam whenever adult steelhead are released upstream of the Dam.  We will tag adult steelhead with radio tags and track them to document their migrations, passage delays if any, spawning distribution and final disposition in the watershed. Mobile tracking may be conducted weekly by foot, boat, airplane and automobile to document the locations of uniquely coded tags throughout the basin. Multiple fixed site receivers will continuously monitor the frequency of radio tags at strategic locations such as stream confluences, fish ladders, and passage impediments.
